On August 9, 2008 we were married. We wanted to wait a couple years before having kids and in early 2010, we took the approach, "if it happens, it happens."
Early July, I was feeling extremely tired. I figured I was either getting sick or pregnant. By July 12th (when I took a home pregnancy test), we were both pretty sure it would turn up positive. Now, the test says it can take anywhere from 1-3 minutes to display a result. This test result revealed in about 15 seconds (in the evening). Twins run in my family (big time), but you still never think it'll happen to you. I also know that, with twins, hormone levels are higher. At this point, we started wondering...but still didn't think it was possible.
I had to wait until I was about 8 weeks along before they would get me in for my first appointment. The wait was hard because you just want to "know!" On August 6th, I went in for my first appointment (a Friday). We specifically asked the doctor, "When can we find out we are not having twins?" She chuckled and replied, "We'll take a look today!" She told me later that she gets asked that question, and similar, a lot...and, it's never twins! In the office ultrasound, she easily found one baby and saw what looked like it could be another one hiding behind. She couldn't get a good look at it, so she scheduled us an official ultrasound for the following Monday.
On Monday, August 9th (our 2 year anniversary), we found out we were having 2 babies (picture below)...2 very wiggly babies! We initially felt a range of emotions from excited, to scared, to how in the world are we going to do this, to feeling overwhelmingly blessed.
Here is a picture of me at 15 weeks pregnant...I was still pretty nauseated at this point in my pregnancy. It didn't really get better until about 17 or 18 weeks.
The thing about being pregnant with twins is that you start showing so quickly! I was wearing maternity clothes really early on.
On Friday, October 22nd, we found out that our two little blessings will be two little girls. They are fraternal, not identical (we know this for sure now as they look like sisters, but not exactly alike). During the ultrasound, they were very active...kicking and wiggling their arms and bodies. It was a lot of fun to watch. I was able to feel them move pretty early on...around 16 weeks I believe. Jonathan was able to feel one kick for the first time in early November.
The hardest part about finding our our babies' genders was not telling anyone until we could do our big reveal to our families. We had to wait until the next day to do this. We invited everyone over to our house for dinner.
The big reveal was in the cake I had baked earlier that day, but that had to wait until dessert.
During dinner everyone was making their guesses as to what they thought our babies' genders were.

When dessert time arrived, the girls' grandma and nana cut the cake to reveal the two pink layers that told everyone we were having two girls! The only person who guessed girl/girl was my brother-in-law, Nathan. The most popular guess was boy/girl and I think only one person guessed boy/boy.
